Farming Tips:
- Crops need space - plant them at least 1m apart
- Crops don't need water but do need adequate lighting
- Build fences to protect crops from enemies and wandering boars
- One harvest typically yields 2-3 seeds in addition to the crop
- Store seeds in chests for future planting
Beekeeping
Honey is an essential ingredient for mead bases, which are used to create various potions.
Getting Started:
- Find beehives in abandoned buildings
- Destroy the hive (ranged weapons recommended) to have a chance of obtaining a Queen Bee
- Craft a Beehive (10 Wood, 1 Queen Bee)
- Place the Beehive in an open area (needs at least 2m clearance around it)
Beekeeping Tips:
- Check if the bees are happy ("The bees are happy" message when hovering)
- Beehives don't function during rain
- Each hive produces 4 honey approximately every 20 minutes (game time)
- Honey doesn't need to be harvested immediately - it accumulates
Animal Taming and Breeding
Taming Boars
Boars are the easiest animals to tame and provide a renewable source of leather scraps and meat.
How to Tame Boars:
- Build a pen with at least 2m high walls (stake walls work well)
- Lure wild boars into the pen or use the Harpoon to drag them
- Drop food (berries, mushrooms, carrots) near them
- Back away - they won't eat if you're too close
- Wait for the taming process (shown as yellow stars) to complete
- Feed two tamed boars to breed them (they must have full health)
Tips for Boar Farming:
- They startle easily - avoid sudden movements and equipping torches
- Each food item advances taming by about 10%
- 1★ and 2★ boars provide more materials when harvested
- Keep at least two boars alive for continued breeding
Taming Wolves
Wolves can be tamed to provide protection and a source of wolf pelts.
How to Tame Wolves:
- Build a pen in or near the Mountain biome
- Wolves are found in Mountains, more common at night
- Use the Harpoon to drag them into the pen
- Feed them raw meat only (any type works)
- Stay away during the taming process as they're more aggressive than boars
Tips for Wolf Breeding:
- Tamed wolves will follow you unless told to stay
- They'll attack enemies on sight
- 2★ wolves are rare but extremely valuable for breeding
- Wolf cubs grow into adults after two in-game days
- Tamed wolves don't take frost damage
Taming Lox
Lox are large creatures found in the Plains biome. They're challenging to tame but provide high-quality meat and can be ridden.
How to Tame Lox:
- Build a very sturdy pen with stone walls
- Lure or Harpoon a Lox into the pen
- Feed them Barley or Cloudberries
- The taming process takes significantly longer than boars or wolves
Tips for Lox Care:
- Tamed Lox can be fitted with a saddle for riding
- They make powerful battle mounts
- Lox meat is one of the best food sources in the game
- Breeding Lox requires significant space

Advanced Building Techniques
Structural Integrity System
Understanding how the building physics work in Valheim is crucial for advanced construction:
- Buildings must be grounded - connected to the earth or stone
- Color coding indicates structural integrity (blue → green → yellow → red)
- Stone has higher structural integrity than wood
- "Core wood" and "iron wood" are stronger than regular wood
- Vertical structures can support more weight than horizontal ones
Building Support Techniques
- Iron Beams - Add them to wood structures for significantly more stability
- Stone Pillars - Create solid foundations that reach up through buildings
- Cross-bracing - Adding diagonal supports significantly increases stability
- Buttressing - External supports that help distribute weight
- Terrain Manipulation - Use the hoe to create level building platforms
Advanced Aesthetics
- Use different wood types for visual contrast
- Incorporate stone bases with wooden upper stories
- Add decorative elements like banners, item stands, and trophies
- Create custom furniture by combining basic building pieces
- Use different roof pieces for more complex designs
Building Defense
- Construct moats around your base (enemies can't swim)
- Create elevated platforms for archers
- Use stake walls as a first defensive perimeter
- Build hidden emergency shelters
- Place workbenches strategically to prevent enemy spawns
Portal Networks
Creating Portal Networks
Portals allow instant travel between distant locations, making exploration and resource gathering much more efficient.
Requirements:
- Surtling Cores (from the Black Forest burial chambers)
- Fine Wood (from Birch and Oak trees)
- Greydwarf Eyes
- Bronze or better tools to harvest Fine Wood
Basic Setup:
- Craft two portals (10 Fine Wood, 2 Surtling Cores, 4 Greydwarf Eyes each)
- Place them where you want to create a connection
- Give both portals the same tag name (click E to rename)
- The portals will connect automatically when they share the same tag
Portal Hub Designs
A portal hub centralizes your network for easier management:
- Circular Hub - Portals arranged in a circle with signs
- Hallway Design - Linear arrangement with room for expansion
- Tower Hub - Vertical arrangement with multiple floors
- Categorized Hub - Group portals by biome or purpose
Portal Limitations
- Certain items can't be transported through portals:
- Any ore (Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Flametal)
- Refined metals (Bronze, Iron, etc.)
- Dragon Eggs
- Some boss materials
- Portals require shelter to protect from weather damage
- Enemies may target and destroy unprotected portals
Portal Strategy Tips
- Use a consistent naming convention (e.g., "Mine1", "Swamp2")
- Carry materials for an emergency portal during explorations
- Place a "switching portal" at your base that can be renamed as needed
- Secure portals in outposts with stakes or walls
- Place a chest with portal materials near each portal for quick repairs
